You're likely wanting the best coffee in Hobart, not a poor experience where you sit down and receive a runny burnt cup of dirty water. I don't think anyone does. I've had those. Those cafes are not on this list. Below, you'll only find the best cafes in Hobart where you can enjoy specialty coffee.
This list is by no means exhaustive, so if you find another location I haven't included, please let me know in the comments!
Is it hard to find the best cafes in Hobart? Not really. Hobart's cafe scene has evolved in recent years so most coffee shops will deliver quality coffee along with breakfast and lunch. However, with so many coffee shops in Hobart, you might feel like you're missing out and accidentally stumble across one of the rare locations with only mediocre coffee that the locals know to avoid.
I've traveled and been in the same situation. As a local, I'd prefer you didn't have that experience in Hobart.

Possibly one of the most popular locations in Hobart, Pilgrim Coffee never disappoints. Their baristas always deliver an exceptional experience. They often have two or three different filters running for those who love a batchie. Coffee is done right here.
If you're in the heart of Hobart's CBD, Pilgrim Coffee is probably your best option. If you're in the area for a few days, there's nothing wrong with making this your regular and not exploring the other options. You won't be disappointed.
If you don't mind splurging a bit for your caffeine fix, Some of their filters may cost upwards of $24, but I assure you, it's worth it. I am yet to have a filter that I haven't enjoyed. Brian the owner can often be spotted perfecting his craft outside of opening hours, a sure sign that he takes this seriously and makes every last drop of your premium coffee count.
Their selection comes from across the globe (one of the main factors in the price), providing a glimpse into flavours that would otherwise never be experienced.
On the odd occasion, you might be in for a treat with Brian brewing up some tea in one of his siphon brewers as a palette cleanser.
I'll leave it there. Somewhere Coffee Bar really does have to be experienced firsthand.
I fell in love with the aesthetic from the moment I walked in back in 2017. My two favourite drinks include the mango smoothie (topped with all sorts of delightful nuts, seeds and dried fruit) and then the iced chocolate that comes with coconut cream. The chocolate itself tastes more natural and organic compared to the rich and sometimes sickly sweet iced chocolates you find elsewhere.
The menu is ever-changing, so if you've been before, it's worth visiting Born In Brunswick again later down the track, you won't be disappointed.
They don't take bookings, so feel free to walk right in! The earlier the better - they're a popular destination.
If I'm purely after coffee, Audrey is one of my go-to locations on the Eastern shore of Hobart. They have locations in both Rokeby and Rosny Park, delivering the same exceptional coffee and service. You'll get a great cup of caffeine here.
Perhaps a hidden gem that isn't so hidden for the locals? I started going here after a Saturday morning park run for both a coffee and their brekkie brioche, which in my opinion, is one of the best I've had in Tasmania. Only a few top it, perhaps a review for another day.
For those in the Bellerive Quay area, you won't want to go elsewhere.
I must admit, I've always wanted to get the Barista Breakfast at Bear With Me, but have never found myself needing three cups of coffee back to back. They'll serve you up with a milk-based coffee, filter, and an espresso (or similar). If you're not after a caffeine fix for the next few days, Bear With Me's food options are well worth trying. With a crafted balance of flavour, presentation and quantity, I'm always satisfied at Bear With Me.
Vilicia is the sister cafe of Bear With Me, delivering the same exceptional coffee that you expect. They use Ona coffee beans (unsure on how frequently they rotate between roasts) to give a creamy espresso and well-textured milk.

When I'm not running Ona coffee beans, VIllino Coffee Synergy beans are my go-to for espresso. Several cafes I've been to run these beans too, and for good reason. They now have a sister cafe in Moonah called Wondr that is also worth a visit. Would recommend visiting both!
Wide Awake doesn't boast that they have good service, they just have good service. The owner is incredible with names and faces and will work hard on remembering your order, delivering consistent coffee, and providing an inviting atmosphere. Visit once today and again in two years and there's a chance he'll remember you. Had me hooked after the first visit.
They have a small selection of savory and sweet treats to choose from if you're feeling peckish.
They're located in North Hobart and are the only cafe I'll visit in the area.
Not quite Hobart, but still worthy to be on the list. Maxie Coffee, located in Kingston, delivers a great all-round experience of coffee and food. Nothing stand-out, just great coffee and what else could you ask for?
I promise I'm not sponsored by them, but if you visit Tasmania, I'd consider Cubed Espresso as one of the highlights of Tasmania that you have to see. They're located in Eaglehawk Neck, the gateway to Port Arthur, with a view of the Tasman Peninsula that feels too good to be true. It's one of the only cafes in the state that offers such picturesque views along with a delightful coffee experience. Don't drink coffee? First, why are you on this page, but second, they have a seven-spice chai that is so tempting I often order this instead of a coffee.
If you're planning a visit, Instagram will often have up-to-date operating hours as these vary throughout the year.
I love the aesthetic of Sisterhood. You come here to grab lunch, and have coffee, not necessarily to grab a takeaway to go. Coffee tastes great, and if you’re up for trying something new, the “Black with Tonic & Orange” is worth a try. Would I grab it every time? Probably not, but it’s fun if you like experimenting with your coffee!
I’d recommend going to check Sisterhood out if you’re in the Sandy Bay area!
This is the daily for me. I often grab a coffee with work colleagues and we go here not only out of convenience, but great service and coffee too. The team are friendly, up for a chat (when not busy) and delivers great coffee every time.
Most of the food is made in-house, a real treat to go with your coffee if you’re after some food.

Next door to Vilicia is Yellow Bernard. The line is often out the door which speaks volumes to the quality of coffee and service. Well deserving to be on the best cafes in Hobart list.
Zimmah is tucked away on an internal block, with little to no signage on the street. If you weren't looking for it, you wouldn't find it. This makes it one of my favourite locations that only Hobart locals are familiar with. Personally, I only ever go for coffee. The baristas at Zimmah know coffee well, love latte art, and are invested in their craft. Some of the best coffee in Hobart here.
The interior is a vibe too. Go check it out and maybe even grab a bag of beans - they're one of the many Hobart coffee roasters.
I have to admit, I've only visited Pigeon Hole once. It was a fair while ago, but since then, I've only heard good things. My experience was great and based on that, I'd go again.
Pigeon Hole is a short walk from the CBD, or if you have a vehicle, drive out to Goulburn Street where parking is often plentiful on weekends, but not so on weekdays (a common spot for city workers to park and walk into work).
Another great option in the South Hobart area. Always packed. Can't complain here.
Liverpool Street is one of Hobart's most walked areas, and Berta is located right in the heart of it. I love the aesthetic inside. The service has always gone above expectations and the coffee and food are delicious. No reason not to go in my mind, other than you have countless other options and need to just choose one.
They serve breakfast and lunch Monday to Saturday, with an all-day brunch on Sunday.
